Flexibility Exercise for Nursery Children: Bicycle Kick Stretches

Exercise Movement:

  • Place your baby on their back

  • Take one of their feet in each of your hands and carefully guide each foot in a circular motion like they are pedalling a bike

  • Alternate the direction in which the legs are ‘pedalling’

  • You may like to make a different sound for each direction. For example, a driving sound for moving forwards and a rewinding sound for moving backwards. This will keep your baby alert and engaged.

Key Focus:

  • Bend your baby’s knee up towards their body, then guide the leg down and out straight before rotating up towards the body again.

Flexibility Exercise for Toddlers & Preschoolers/Kinders: Animal Yoga

Exercise Movement:

  • This exercise is best performed in a room or outdoor area with open space so that you and your child can move freely.

  • The ‘koala, ‘giraffe’, ‘frog’, ‘dolphin’, ‘octopus’, ‘starfish’ and ‘sea turtle’ animal yoga poses can be viewed here and are guided by our in-house Oac Active Program Manager

  • Hold each pose for 10 – 20 seconds and repeat each pose 2 – 3 times.

Key Focus:

  • Encourage your child to keep their body relaxed and to focus on breathing throughout the exercises.
