Supporting Early Learning Through Pattern Exploration At OAC Mernda

In the Blossoms room at OAC Mernda, we’ve been bringing stories to life through hands-on learning experiences. Recently, the children explored the book Patterns Fish, which sparked their curiosity about the patterns we see all around us.
Together, the group discussed the different patterns they could spot — stripes, spots, zigzags and swirls. The children loved connecting the colourful illustrations from the story to patterns in their own world.
To extend this learning, our Educators set up a small group art experience where each child created their own patterned fish. With bright paints and plenty of creative freedom, the children explored stripes, dots, waves and more. Techniques like sponging and finger painting added extra fun and sensory exploration to the activity.
The room was filled with creativity, colour and collaboration as the children proudly shared ideas and expressed themselves through their artwork.
This is just one of the ways our Grow Curriculum supports early learning through play — building creativity, confidence and teamwork while exploring new concepts in a meaningful, child-led way.
