As caring parents, your priority is ensuring the well-being and joy of your little ones. A significant part of achieving this is recognising the importance of keeping them active and engaged in play for their overall growth. OAC’s Active Program Manager, Chloe Beer shares her practical tips to seamlessly integrate movement into your child’s daily routine for their well-being.

1. Participate

Lead By Example: Encourage a love for movement by actively participating in physical activities with your little ones. Be their inspiration for a lifelong journey of staying active.
Quality Time: Whether it’s a game of tag, a nature walk, or a lively dance party in the living room, these shared moments become lasting memories, nurturing both your child’s health and your bond.

2. Dress For Movement:

Comfort Is Key: Keep your little movers in comfy, breathable clothing that allows unrestricted movement.
Explore And Play: Proper attire opens doors for your child to explore physical abilities, building confidence in their movements.

3. Leave The Car Behind:

Walking Adventures: Opt for walking or biking whenever possible. Transform routine trips into exciting adventures, exploring the outdoors on foot.
Neighbourhood Strolls: Take a leisurely stroll through your neighbourhood, pointing out local sights, engaging your child’s curiosity, and fostering a love for outdoor exploration.

4. Make Activity A Part of Your Regular Routine:

Consistency Matters: Establish consistent time slots for physical activities, mirroring the importance of nightly routines. This not only promotes healthy habits but also provides a sense of security for your child.
Homework for the Body: Treat physical activities as essential “homework for the body” — a daily investment in your child’s health and overall well-being.

5. Make it Fun And Enjoyable:

Playful Learning: Toddlers and preschoolers thrive in a playful environment. Turn activities into games, creating a positive association with movement.
Celebrate Efforts: Encourage and praise your child’s efforts, fostering a sense of accomplishment. The joy of participation becomes a reward in itself.

As parents of toddlers and preschoolers, your role in their physical development extends beyond keeping them active; it’s about cultivating a foundation for a healthy, happy future.

By actively participating, dressing for movement, leaving the car behind, making activity a routine, and ensuring it’s enjoyable, you invest in their health and create lasting bonds and precious memories. Join us on this movement-filled journey, nurturing your little ones into happy, healthy movers.

Establishing Positive Sleeping Habits

According to the National Sleep Foundation, children aged 3-5 years need around 11 - 13 hours of sleep each night. In addition, many need to nap during the day, with the length of naps ranging between 1-2 hours a day. Typically, most children stop napping after five years of age.
