At OAC Mernda, our 3-year-old children have been celebrating Harmony Week through meaningful learning experiences focused on diversity, inclusion and belonging.

The children explored a picture book that celebrates diverse childhoods and highlights the important things we all share. Through the story, they began to understand that while people may look different, speak different languages and live different lives, we all share common feelings and humanity.

This led to thoughtful group discussions, where children reflected on how we may look different on the outside but are the same on the inside. The story’s message encouraged children to appreciate differences while recognising what connects us all.

Children also explored their own identities, talking about skin colour and learning that every skin tone is unique and beautiful. They shared ideas about diversity within their families, friendships and community, proudly repeating the message, “We are all the same.”

To bring this learning to life, the children participated in a hands-on painting experience, creating a “people chain” using a variety of skin tones. This creative activity helped reinforce their understanding of inclusion in a visual and meaningful way.

We will continue to build on this important learning, supporting children to develop empathy, respect and a strong sense of belonging in their world.
