When Children Feel Heard, They Thrive

Each year, National Child Protection Week shines a spotlight on the important role we all play in helping children feel safe, supported and heard. This year’s theme, Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action, reminds us that meaningful change starts with listening to children and taking action to support their wellbeing.  

For families, creating a safe environment for children is about more than physical safety. It’s about knowing your child feels valued, respected, confident to express themselves and supported by trusted adults who genuinely listen. 

At Only About Children, this belief sits at the heart of our Child Safe Commitment: every child is heard, safe and belongs.  

Safety Begins with Feeling Heard 

For young children, feeling safe starts with knowing there are caring adults who will listen. 

Whether they’re sharing an idea, expressing a feeling, asking for help or simply wanting to be understood, these everyday interactions help children develop confidence and trust in themselves and the people around them. 

When children know their voice matters, they’re more likely to build positive relationships, express their needs and develop the confidence to navigate new experiences. 

Helping Children Build Their Voice 

Supporting children to feel heard doesn’t happen through a single conversation. It develops over time through everyday experiences, responsive relationships and opportunities for children to share their thoughts and feelings. 

At OAC, we help children learn about respectful relationships, personal boundaries, emotions and safe behaviours in age-appropriate ways. Our aim is to empower children with the confidence to express themselves and seek support from trusted adults when they need it.  

Meet Bunji: Our Child Safety Mascot 

One of the ways we bring these conversations to life is through Bunji, our child safety mascot. 

Bunji helps introduce important concepts such as feelings, personal safety, wellbeing and speaking up in engaging, age-appropriate ways that children can understand and connect with. Through stories, discussions and learning experiences, Bunji supports children to develop confidence, resilience and an understanding that their voice matters.  

For families, Bunji also provides a natural way to continue these conversations at home, helping children receive consistent messages about safety and seeking support from trusted adults. 

Working Together with Families 

Creating child safe environments is something we do together. 

Strong partnerships between families and educators help children feel secure, supported and understood. Open communication allows us to better understand each child’s unique needs and create a consistent sense of safety and belonging across both home and early learning environments. 

When children see the important adults in their lives working together, they develop trust, confidence and a stronger sense of security.

While National Child Protection Week is an important opportunity for reflection, creating child safe environments is a commitment that extends far beyond a single week each year.
